Peter Adjaye

Sound and Image Festival 2020

Figure 1: A Set of Sonic Dialogues, (Adjaye, 2016)

Peter Adjaye is a sound artist focusing on sound architect. He looks at how sound relates to the space and emotion, thinking about stories that are untold or not told enough of. Him and his brother, David Adjaye, have a limited edition vinyl 'Dialogues' (Figure 1) showcasing their collaborations between music and architect. What's interesting is how Peter expresses his music in relation to architecture and geometry. Geometry or the culture of geometry of space relates to the mathematics and sound mathematics. One of the pieces Adjaye spoke about was a call and response piece shown within a museum setting. Working with sounds over the internet (zoom) due to the Covid-19 situation in the gallery space, having the participants call and respond to each other, letting the voices reach and 'bleed' into the space and reacting to history. He mentioned how sound is not something that you can control and through his experiences when working in exhibitions. Most try to contain the sound within one room or area but sound does not behave this way, relating back to nature and how sounds naturally fill out the space. It got me thinking about how when we were setting up the exhibition, there were discussions about how the sound would overlap each other and that it would 'ruin' the pieces, but actually what is the overlapping 'bleeding' sounds are a part of it? Perhaps the overlapping of sounds could be another experimentation and it would change how the audience would view not just the work but he exhibition as a whole. In the panel, Adjaye speaks about how sound is immersive, it is multilayered, it can make a static image or a space move which I think it a beautiful description. Thinking back to the project of call and response, the sounds create are like going through a journey, not just in terms of going through the each person from around the world to (in and out into other spaces through technology) but also for the story being told.
