Tutorial with Jim No.2

After doing the three different experimentations of 2D stitching, 3D stitching and filming the process, I asked Jim for some feedback. He talked about how a lot of the work, especially the video, links back to the 1970s performance art but then has a contemporary side with the 3D scans, trying to bridge the gap between the two. The film itself is like a performative art piece where then the performance is recorded and then becomes digital, then by playing with it digitally it becomes an object. What it does come down to is how the work is going to be presented, maybe it being a hybrid of the two elements. It's clear that what I'm showing is about the process adding that it follows the 1970s performative art pieces, where it wasn't about the aesthetics of the piece. Relating back to Bruce Nauman, the aesthetics of his work became the aesthetics, even thought for the artist it was about recording the art or the process. At the moment I am working with a very basic sculptural material (mod roc) which is the building block of sculpture. When I start to finalist it, I need to think about what does it mean to me to use something so traditional, that has a root link in traditional sculpture, doing traditional performative pieces meaning of showing the hands from above. This is one hand of the project, on the other I'm then starting to manipulate the videos digitally and then scanning and stitching them to create some beautiful images. At the end when I find a solution, it comes down to me and what it means for the project and what meaning do I want it to have.

Questions also raised are wether this will be experiences in a gallery space to which then a proposal will need to do made. How to set it up? How does the set up effect the experiences? Do the audience need to wear headphones be because it changed how you experience sounds? Do I want to make a short film instead or have a live stream of my making the process? A part of my want to set in the parameters of creating something that is not constricted to the restriction of lockdown, to come up with a final that people can experience within their home.

What does it mean? What is it's purpose? What are the parameters? It's important to question and answer these things because where they are being presented will change the meaning. If thinking about screen, Jim mentioned how then I would need to think about the purpose of the screen, if I was to look at a phone screen what does that mean for the project? Looking at the size of the phone and the relationship between you holding your phone and then watching hands in the video. It all needs to go into consideration when thinking about the final. Jim also said that it's important to understand that I can't do everything and so to decide on something that I can do for the project. Even if it's not the only solution and there isn't only one solution and no right solution.
