Brainstorming for Final

Understanding the material for more than it is (more than just Mod roc)

I'm come to realise that it is not about a final product, perhaps instead of overcomplicating myself into trying to find the 'best solution' maybe I can create a piece that highlights all of the part of the project that I had enjoyed and learned from. I think because this project is focused on the materiality and process that having a final piece almost changes and diverts from what I am exploring. All the models I have created have fallen part and also disintegrated to the point where then the process has come to an end. My main point is for the audience to understand mod roc for more than it is, you can see the material in different perspectives. Maybe I can create an archive of the process that I have been through these last few months, having different images, experiments, blog pages that have encapsulated my thoughts. This process has been a major turning point for me, not just in knowing more about Mod roc but in how I think, how I create work. For me, it is the first project for the MA and its the transition from the BA Graphic Design to MA Digital Art, its the process of not only of the material but in the changes and development of my thinking and how I approach a project, learning more about myself as an artist and a designer. Mod roc is the foundation of sculpture, going back to the basics which I feel I did to then learn about the material and about myself (going back to the start). An Archive would encapsulate all of my experiences and the changes that I went through in the process of exploring mod roc which then I can go back to and take references from in future projects.

After more thoughts and also a discussion with Megan, the blog is essentially a digital archive of the process and so wouldn't make sense to create a physical archive. Thinking back to the video experiment of showing the process of the experience, the idea came up about doing a performative piece, drawing relations to Rie Nakajima performative pieces of her sound pieces. The perforative piece would be exampled within my home as an example. Because the models are not large-scale and the performance would not need a lot of space to perform in, it is easy to fit within any exhibition space (though I would need to say what size I would need in the proposal). I would do this performance for 3 days, each day having a different model being create with different amount of energy as it would depend on how I felt. The process is in two parts (experience with wet mod roc and dry mod roc) meaning the performances will be in 2 parts (Part 1 Wet, Part 2 Dry). In between each piece it would be a 30 minute wait for the mod roc to dry to then be moulded again. A performative piece would allow the audience first hand view into my experience and process with mod roc from start to finish, seeing the amount of energy being put into each piece and how the model changes due to the energy being put in. The sounds being heard would be a part of the performance but not the highlight as I found that within the video experiment that the uncomfortable sounds took the attention away from the process of the experience.

Perhaps another direction would be to take the 2D stitched images and do this large scale (also in a gallery space). Taking more different aspects of the models to create almost a wall filled with images, each one zooming into a particular section of the model that I found interesting to show my experience of mod roc and also this allowed me to have control over what the audience would see as well (as it is only a section of the model). However both of theses ideas would need a proposal which goes against the parameter that I had set previous.

I'm not sure why but this time round I am finding it incredibly difficult to choose a final and to trust myself to pick a direction that I think if the best solution for the project. Understanding that it is my work and I need to choose something that I would like to do and present outside the University, it's difficult not only because of the lockdown and personal situations but also having my though counter almost any question that I think of when evaluating a direction.
